A Milestone Year for the Sun Belt
The 2026 MLB Draft marked a watershed moment for the Sun Belt Conference, as twenty of its athletes heard their names called, pushing the league’s all‑time draft tally to 894 selections. The conference has now logged a first‑round pick in four of the past five drafts, underscoring a sustained pipeline of talent that continues to attract major‑league interest.
Among the standouts, Cameron Flukey of Coastal Carolina made history as the first Sun Belt player ever selected in the first round, landing at the 22nd overall spot with the Detroit Tigers. Southern Miss’ Joey Urban, the 2026 Sun Belt Baseball Championship Most Outstanding Player, followed with a move to the Toronto Blue Jays, while Louisiana Tech’s newest draftees, Declan Dahl and Colton Coates, joined the ranks after the Bulldogs’ recent entry into the league.
Day two of the draft saw a flurry of activity, with Appalachian State’s Gage Peterson kicking off the second day for the Washington Nationals, and Louisiana’s Cody Brasch, Troy’s Aaron Piasecki and Benjamin Stubbs, South Alabama’s Jacob Haley, Georgia State’s Wills Maginnis, and James Madison’s Luke McGrath all securing contracts with clubs ranging from the San Francisco Giants to the Chicago Cubs.
The draft also highlighted the reach of the conference across the country, with prospects from states as far north as New York and as far west as California, reflecting the Sun Belt’s expanding geographic footprint.
