Spring Practice Brims with Energy
Arizona State's football program kicked off its second day of spring drills with a palpable buzz, as coaches and players alike emphasized the urgency of building momentum before the upcoming season.
The defensive unit stood out, with redshirt defensive back Jordan Clark lining up as the slot cornerback alongside the starting front seven. Veteran linebackers Kyle Soelle and Merlin Robertson led the charge during the 11‑on‑11 segment, showcasing the experience that the coaching staff hopes will translate into a sturdier front.
Special advisor Marvin Lewis was on hand to help Clark fine‑tune his alignment early in practice, a detail that underscored the collaborative approach of the staff.
On the offensive side, redshirt junior quarterback Trenton Bourguet took the first‑team reps, displaying a comfort level in the pocket that contrasted with his counterpart, Alabama transfer Paul Tyson, who remained with the second unit.
Bourguet’s familiarity with the playbook shone through his throws, while Tyson continued to adjust to new surroundings. The offense remains a work in progress, requiring tighter synergy as the drills advance.
Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Chad Johnson Jr. and redshirt junior Andre Johnson were among those working primarily with the second‑team offense, indicating a depth of talent that could prove vital later in the season.
Defensive standout Eric Gentry, who posted 45 tackles and a sack last year, appears to be moving well despite his weight, a promising sign for the secondary’s versatility.
Looking Ahead
The staff emphasized that the energy displayed provides a foundation for the work ahead, especially as the team integrates new pieces and seeks consistency.
