The courts channel runoff through a network of underground pipes and bio‑retention basins, a technique inspired by flood‑prone cities in Europe. Each basin can hold half the volume of an Olympic‑sized swimming pool, acting like a giant sponge that slows the flow of water and reduces the strain on sewer systems during heavy storms.
Engineers from Hazen and Sawyer and the urban planning firm Marc Wouters Studios collaborated with the design collective Grain Collective to turn the concept into reality.
