A New Tournament Structure
The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will see both its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments adopt a revised format beginning next season. Ten teams from each gender will earn a spot in the championship event, a shift from the previous eight‑team limit.
Under the new arrangement, the two teams that finish the regular season atop the standings will bypass the opening rounds and advance straight to the semifinals. This provides a tangible reward for consistent performance and aims to reduce the volatility that has seen top seeds eliminated early in recent years.
The first‑round matchups will pit the seventh seed against the tenth seed, and the eighth seed against the ninth seed on the men’s side, with analogous pairings on the women’s side. Winners of those games will then meet the fifth and sixth seeds, while the third and fourth seeds await the victors in the quarterfinals.
The revised bracket reflects a broader evolution of the tournament, which has swung between eight, ten and twelve teams over the past decade. The conference’s working group of head coaches and administrators crafted the proposal after noting that three of the last four regular‑season champions failed to reach the semifinals.
Beyond the immediate competitive implications, the SWAC hopes the new format will enhance fan engagement, improve television appeal and create additional growth opportunities for basketball across its member institutions.
The conference has also pledged to continuously evaluate the model’s impact on long‑term sustainability, using data gathered from the inaugural season to fine‑tune the structure for future editions.

The adjustment impacts several historic programs across the conference, including the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Alcorn State and Alabama A&M, all of which will adapt their schedules and preparation strategies to the new competitive landscape.
