A Strategic Appointment
The Danish Ice Hockey Union announced today that Swedish tactician Tommy Samuelsson will assume the role of head coach of the Danish national team, bringing a quarter‑century of elite‑level experience to the position.
Samuelsson’s résumé reads like a tour of Europe’s top leagues – stints in Sweden’s SHL, Switzerland’s NL, Germany’s DEL and Austria’s EBEL have yielded a World Championship gold, two silver medals, three SHL titles and two promotions from the HockeyAllsvenskan to the SHL, while he has also been crowned Coach of the Year in both the SHL and HockeyAllsvenskan.
Morten Green, the Union’s Elite Director, praised the appointment, stating that Samuelsson’s deep tactical understanding and genuine passion for the sport make him the ideal leader to steer Denmark’s ambitions forward.
In his first public comments, Samuelsson expressed excitement about the challenge, highlighting the country’s recent breakthroughs in the NHL where players such as Nikolaj Ehlers and Frederik Andersen have become household names, and he believes those successes can be a springboard for broader growth.
The Union hopes that Samuelsson’s international pedigree will translate into stronger development programs and a more competitive presence on the world stage, building on a foundation of rising talent and a growing fan base.
