Alfons Freij’s 2025‑26 campaign began in the Swedish Hockey League, where he suited up for Timra IK before earning a gold medal with Sweden at the 2026 World Junior Hockey Championship. In 42 SHL games he posted 11 points, a modest tally that nonetheless marked his transition from prospect to senior contributor.
After the SHL season, Freij crossed the Atlantic to join the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. His fifth AHL appearance, on April 15, resulted in his first professional point — an assist that signaled his ability to adapt to the North American style of play.
A Season of Firsts
Back in Winnipeg, the Jets have surrounded Freij with fellow Swedes, including newly drafted forwards Sascha Boumedienne, Viktor Klingsell and Viggo Björck. The familiar cultural thread has created a supportive locker room environment, easing his adjustment to the organization.
Looking ahead, Freij says the focus will be on tightening his defensive responsibilities and adding physicality to his game. “I want to be more reliable in my own zone and bring more intensity,” he explained, outlining the areas he plans to sharpen before the next season.
The blend of international experience, early professional milestones and a camaraderie of countrymen positions Freij as a promising piece of the Jets’ future, a narrative that will unfold as the team prepares for the upcoming campaign.
