Indiana State’s baseball program has quietly become a fertile breeding ground for future major‑league talent, and the summer of 2026 is no exception. Former Sycamores are scattered across the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and a variety of Double‑A and High‑A affiliates, each posting performances that suggest the pipeline is not only active but accelerating.
Right‑hander Colin Rea, who spent the bulk of the season with the Cubs, logged 123.1 innings and posted an 8‑8 record with a 4.58 ERA, striking out 91 batters while walking just 43. Across the league, left‑hander Sean Manaea turned heads for the Mets, going 2‑0 in August with a 3.26 ERA and a season‑high 11 strikeouts in a three‑hitter against Pittsburgh.
Position players are also carving out roles. Infielder Clay Dungan appeared in 89 games for the El Paso Chihuahuas, batting .235 with 12 doubles and eight homers, while catcher Grant Magill posted a 2.01 ERA over 22 relief appearances for the Akron RubberDucks before landing on the 60‑day injured list.
Promotion stories add another layer of excitement. Pitcher Luke Hayden earned a call‑up to the Chattanooga Lookouts, where he went 1‑0 with a 3.60 ERA in Double‑A, and catcher Luis Hernandez was similarly promoted to the Wichita Wind Surge, hitting .173 with a home run in his first stretch at that level.
The momentum extends to a handful of other standouts. Randal Diaz, after a midseason trade to the Frederick Keys, is batting .288 with seven doubles and six homers, while outfielder Carter Beck exploded in his rookie campaign, posting a .409 average with the Augusta GreenJackets before advancing to the Rome Emperors.
Even the bullpen is benefiting from Sycamore depth. Connor Fenlong sits at 3‑1 with a 1.67 ERA for the West Michigan Whitecaps, and Cole Gilley has gone 7‑1 with a 3.47 ERA for the Clearwater Threshers, including a 2.00 ERA over his last four starts.
The collective surge of former Sycamores across multiple levels signals a sustained investment in player development. As the summer progresses, the program’s alumni are poised to keep shaping the next wave of professional baseball talent.
