A pivotal verbal pledge
Syracuse University’s basketball program announced its first verbal commitment for the 2027 class on Tuesday, as three‑star wing Jack Donohue from Albany, New York, announced his intention to join the Orange.
The announcement came after a series of contacts between Donohue and the new coaching staff led by Gerry McNamara, who first extended an offer while Donohue was still at Siena and reinforced it during an unofficial visit in June.
Donohue’s pledge reflects a recruiting environment shaped by the NCAA’s 5‑for‑5 eligibility framework and the rising influence of name, image and likeness deals, as well as an expanding pool of international talent.
Other prospects narrowing their choices
Several of the Orange’s target recruits have recently trimmed their lists, including J'Lon Lyons, who narrowed his options to a top eight, Devin Cleveland with a top seven, and Carson Crawford now sitting in a top five.
Syracuse plans to host official visits from several of these players in September and October, taking advantage of the fall recruiting period that permits coaches to attend high school open gyms and conduct in‑home visits.
Among the names on the program’s priority list are Ahmed Nur, Ian Condon, Moussa Kamissoko and Nasir Anderson, while five‑star point guard King Gibson and forward Zion Green are also being monitored for potential shifts.
Coaches are preparing to evaluate additional candidates such as Lewis Uvwo and Carson Crawford, whose recruitment status could evolve as new offers materialize.
The early verbal commitment provides a foundation, but analysts expect a more gradual signing period compared with previous cycles, with many of the top‑100 prospects likely to announce their decisions in April.
