A Fresh Start for the Orange
The program is entering the 2026 campaign with a clear mission: to shed the memory of an eight‑game losing streak that defined the previous year and to lay the groundwork for sustained competitiveness. Head coach Fran Brown has framed the offseason as a period of deliberate construction, emphasizing that each practice and each game will be approached one day at a time.
Central to Brown’s strategy is the need for reliable backup quarterbacks. After redshirt senior Steve Angeli emerged as a national leader in passing before a season‑ending Achilles injury, the team has bolstered its quarterback room with freshman Zaid Lott and retained Angeli’s recovery as a key storyline. The depth at the position is intended to prevent the kind of collapse that plagued the squad last season.
Brown also highlighted the arrival of new assistant coaches who bring fresh perspectives on both sides of the ball. Their influence is already evident in the offensive line’s off‑season work under new coach Juan Castillo, whose techniques have helped the line become one of the most solid units in the program’s recent history.
Defensively, the Orange will lean on linebacker Antoine Deslauriers and defensive back Demetres Samuel Jr., who have been identified as anchors of the unit. Their performances, coupled with the contributions of new defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, are expected to tighten a defense that showed flashes of brilliance but lacked consistency in the previous year.
On the receiving side, wideout Calvin Russell III is slated to return from his own Achilles setback, adding another weapon to a pass‑catching corps that includes senior tight end David Clement, Elijah Moore, and Umari Hatcher. The blend of experience and youthful talent aims to diversify the offense and keep opposing defenses guessing.
The season opener against New Hampshire is being labeled the most critical early test. Brown has said that the team will treat that game as the most important until it is completed, using the result as a benchmark for the weeks that follow.
