Syracuse University’s football program entered the fall with fresh optimism as Coach Fran Brown, now in his third season, unveiled the inaugural depth chart for the 2026 campaign during a press conference on Monday.
Season Outlook
The chart positions sophomore Tylik Hill as the starter at running back, while Penn State transfer Matthew Outten is slated to serve as his backup, giving the Orange depth at the position.
Ahmed Miller, who was expected to compete for a starting role, has been confirmed to take the field for the season opener against New Hampshire, whereas the status of Ju’Juan Johnson remains in doubt after the coach noted that his participation will be decided later.
At quarterback, Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom are projected to be active for the game, and Coach Brown emphasized that the competition for the backup spot will be settled on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing battle for minutes behind the starter.
The offensive line saw key returns as linebacker Gary Bryant and wide receiver Tyshawn Russell resumed practice after overcoming respective knee and ankle injuries that had sidelined them during camp.
Justus Ross‑Simmons’ eligibility, which hinges on a Texas court case scheduled for September 11, could allow the sophomore to contribute sooner rather than later, prompting Brown to suggest that the team should maximize his involvement if possible.
Beyond the roster, Brown voiced confidence in the judicial process and the NCAA’s rulings, stating that student‑athlete welfare is best served by trusting the system to resolve eligibility matters.
