A community‑wide celebration of youth basketball
The Syracuse Housing Authority’s sixth annual 10K Youth Basketball Tournament kicked off at Wilson Park, drawing more than 35 teams from across the city. A fresh co‑ed division for players ages nine to twelve debuted this year, expanding opportunities for young athletes of all genders to compete together.
Beyond the games, the event emphasized mentorship, life‑skill development, and financial literacy. Organizers partnered with local groups to run financial wellness classes and team‑building activities, aiming to equip participants with tools for success both on and off the court.
The tournament’s prize pool includes $10,000 in cash awards, underscoring the commitment to rewarding athletic achievement. In addition, a $5,000 memorial scholarship will be presented to honor the memory of Brexialee Torres Ortiz, a young victim of gun violence whose story has become a catalyst for community investment in youth.
The competition will continue on July 25 and 26, featuring additional games, community activities, and the scholarship presentation ceremony. Organizers say the event reflects a broader vision of investing in the next generation and providing positive outlets for youth in Syracuse.
