A Visionary’s Final Gift
T. Denny Sanford, a Sioux Falls native and self‑made billionaire, died at the age of 90, leaving behind a $4 billion philanthropic estate that has reshaped health care, education and community life across the region.
His first major act of giving came in 1999, when he contributed $2 million to the Children’s Home Society, a gesture that marked the beginning of a decades‑long commitment to vulnerable families.
Over the following years Sanford funneled more than $77 million into the same organization, funding everything from expanded shelter capacity to workforce development programs that now support hundreds of employees.
Health care received the bulk of his generosity. In 2007 he pledged $400 million to Sanford Health, a contribution that enabled the creation of the Sanford Black Hills Medical Center in Rapid City and the ambitious Sanford Virtual Care Center aimed at bridging rural health gaps.
Additional gifts of $300 million funded the Sanford Black Hills Medical Center, while $350 million seeded the Sanford Virtual Care Center, and $100 million launched the Edith Sanford Breast Center, a facility dedicated to breast cancer research and treatment.
Beyond hospitals, Sanford’s dollars revived cultural landmarks such as the State Theatre in Sioux Falls, and expanded the Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium with a new aquarium that draws visitors from across the state.
Education also figured prominently; a $25 million initial gift — followed by a further $10 million — supported the growth of Augustana University’s hockey program and broader campus initiatives.
A Legacy of Community Improvement
Sanford’s philanthropy was guided by a simple principle: improve quality of life for as many people as possible. His donations spanned health, education and community development, leaving an indelible imprint on Sioux Falls and the surrounding region.
