The Taft High School baseball team captured the Public League championship on Saturday, defeating Young 5-1 at the iconic Wrigley Field. The win was sealed by a blend of solid pitching and timely hitting that left the crowd buzzing.
A pitcher’s masterpiece
Junior right‑hander Carlos Gonzalez, who arrived in the United States from Venezuela two years ago, delivered a four‑hit shutout, striking out eight batters and keeping Young’s offense quiet. His composure on the mound set the tone for the entire game.
Acosta’s bat proved equally decisive. He drove in two runs with a timely single and added a three‑run double that stretched the lead to five, giving Taft a comfortable cushion.
A historic drought ends
The victory marked Taft’s first league title since either 1964 or 1968, a span that made the win especially meaningful for Coach Matt Malarski, a 1990 alumnus who dedicated the triumph to his former mentor, Rich Pildes.
What’s next for the Dolphins
Young, despite the loss, finished a strong season that had seen them chase their first city championship since 2010. Coach Chris Cassidy praised his squad’s effort and hinted at a promising future, noting that the experience will fuel next year’s campaign.
Isaac Stoelinga, who went 2‑for‑3 and scored Young’s lone run, will look to rebound in the offseason as the team aims to return to the top of the league.
