A Milestone for Taiwanese Baseball
Taiwan is set to host the group stage and Super Round of the WBSC Premier12, as well as the 2028 Olympic Baseball Final Qualifier, marking a decisive step in the nation’s baseball development.
The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) announced the bid after intensive meetings with World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) officials in Shanghai, where CTBA president Jeffrey Koo Jr. secured formal approval from WBSC president Riccardo Fraccari.
If Team Taiwan finishes as the highest‑ranked Asian side in the Premier12, it will earn a direct berth to the 2028 Olympics, a pathway that could reshape the country’s Olympic qualification strategy.
Rakuten Monkeys manager Tseng Hao-jiu emphasized that playing on home soil offers familiar conditions and the energizing support of local fans, advantages that could prove crucial in high‑stakes games.
Tseng also warned that the added expectations bring heightened pressure, requiring the squad to meet heightened performance standards.
Navigating Scheduling and Talent Challenges
The Olympic baseball tournament coincides with the professional season, complicating player availability compared to the World Baseball Classic, where schedules are more flexible.
Tseng speculated that Major League Baseball might release players for the Olympics, potentially raising the competition level and adding depth to the tournament.
Beyond the immediate competition, the events aim to unite the nation and elevate Taiwan’s profile on the global baseball stage, a vision that aligns with the CTBA’s long‑term strategy.
