Queens Unites for Inclusive Basketball Clinic
A new basketball clinic opened last week in Ridgewood, Queens, bringing together children with developmental disabilities and experienced coaches in a supportive environment.
The initiative, led by the Take Heart Foundation in partnership with Hot Shots Basketball, aimed to teach core basketball skills while fostering confidence and social connection among participants.
Program Vision and Future Outlook
Two hour‑long sessions were held on May 30, each designed to introduce fundamental dribbling, passing and shooting techniques in a low‑pressure setting.
Frank Sardinas, owner of Hot Shots Basketball, along with his coaching staff, guided the young athletes, offering personalized instruction and encouragement.
Graceann Faulkner, vice chair of the Take Heart Foundation, highlighted the importance of such programs, noting that the foundation sponsors full enrollment for a select group of participants to ensure accessibility.
The clinic also reflects the foundation’s broader mission, founded by Eric and Graceann Faulkner after raising their daughter Christina, who has Down syndrome, to expand after‑school sports and mentorship opportunities for children with special needs.
Local officials praised the collaboration; Council Member Phil Wong commended the partners for their commitment to inclusive community programming.
Beyond this event, the Take Heart Foundation plans to host additional inclusive athletic and mentorship initiatives, leveraging community‑driven partnerships to broaden access across Queens.
