Tampa Bay Clears Path for Massive New Rays Stadium
Tampa Bay officials have given the green light to a $2.3 billion stadium project that will become the new home of the Tampa Bay Rays, a move that promises to reshape the region’s sports landscape.
The 31,000‑seat venue is slated to rise near Raymond James Stadium, the Buccaneers’ football arena, and will replace the aging Tropicana Field where the Rays have been based since 1998, barring a short 2025 stint caused by hurricane damage.
Funding for the undertaking combines $796 million from Hillsborough County and $80 million from the City of Tampa, while the Rays themselves have pledged at least $1.3 billion plus any overruns, and the federal government will contribute $30 million from disaster‑recovery reserves.
With the team’s lease at Tropicana Field set to expire in 2028, the project marks a decisive step after a similar $1.3 billion redevelopment plan near the same site collapsed last year, raising questions about the franchise’s long‑term viability.
The development will also incorporate a mixed‑use entertainment district and will be built in partnership with Hillsborough College, which will oversee campus upgrades and related infrastructure.
Patrick Zalupski, who heads the Rays’ ownership group, described the initiative as a historic investment in Tampa Bay’s future and a cornerstone for the city’s evolving sports ecosystem.
