Tanner Nichols, a senior forward from Madison Central High School, has been named the Gatorade Mississippi Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the 2025‑26 season, a tribute to his extraordinary impact on the pitch.
Nichols guided the Jaguars to a flawless 21‑0‑2 record and a coveted state championship, capping the campaign with a 2‑0 victory over Biloxi. His contributions included 20 goals and nine assists, numbers that underscore his dual threat as a scorer and playmaker.
Beyond the stat sheet, Nichols leaves a lasting imprint on his teammates. Coach Phil Buffington of Jackson Academy highlighted the player’s leadership and relentless work ethic, noting that Nichols set a standard for dedication that will echo through the program for years.
A promising future
The accolade also marks the next step in Nichols’s athletic journey. He has signed with Meridian College, where he will continue his academic and soccer pursuits, joining a growing list of Gatorade alumni who have transitioned to the collegiate level. Previous winners such as Aiden Boudro, Connor Dunnigan, Luke Hopkins and Emery Thigpen have each gone on to make notable marks in their respective programs, illustrating a pipeline of talent nurtured across the state.
