Tanner Nichols, a senior at Madison Central High School, has been named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year, capping a high school soccer journey that combined athletic dominance with academic distinction.
Back‑to‑Back Champions
Under Nichols’s leadership the team secured consecutive 7A state championships, a feat that has placed the program among the most successful in recent memory. His influence extended beyond the scoreboard, shaping a culture of excellence that will endure after his graduation.
During the season Nichols recorded 20 goals and supplied nine assists, numbers that reflect both his scoring prowess and his ability to create opportunities for teammates. When his high school career officially ended, he finished with 33 goals and 16 assists, statistics that rank him among the most prolific forwards in state history.
Excellence in the Classroom and the Community
Nichols maintained an A average across his coursework, demonstrating a balance of intellect and athleticism that resonates with coaches, teachers and peers alike. Outside of school he has volunteered as a youth soccer coach and counselor, lending his time to programs that introduce the sport to younger players.
His service reaches further through participation in multiple community‑service initiatives organized by his church congregation, where he mentors teens and helps coordinate local outreach events.
Looking Ahead
Next fall Nichols will continue his soccer career at Meridian Community College, where he hopes to build on the foundation he has established and pursue a degree that aligns with his academic interests. He is the son of Robyn and Jason Nichols, whose support has been a constant thread throughout his achievements.
