A Night of Power Hitting
The University of North Carolina baseball team improved to 19-0 when scoring double digits, routing UNC Wilmington 13-7 on a night that featured a season-high four home runs.
The Tar Heels opened the scoring with a 405-foot, three-run shot by Gavin Gallaher in the first inning, followed by Owen Hull’s 466-foot three-run homer in the second, and Erik Paulsen added a solo blast of 400 feet in the third.
Additional long balls came from Colin Hynek, who capped the ninth with a two-run homer, while Matthew Matthijs earned the win after a 3 1/3 inning outing that included four strikeouts.
Relief pitcher Tom Chmielewski closed the game with two scoreless frames to record his first save of the season, and the bullpen combined with the offense to keep the opposition at bay.
Every starter in the lineup recorded at least one hit, eight of them scored, and the team finished with 13 runs on 13 hits and six walks, underscoring the depth of the attack.
The victory also marked the eighth home run of the night, half by each side, but the Tar Heels’ power surge proved decisive in sealing the win.
