A New Era for the Tar Heels
The North Carolina Tar Heels are looking to turn the page after a disappointing campaign that left the program scrambling for answers.
Among the handful of players set to return, wide receiver Jordan Shipp stands out as a potential catalyst. In 2025 he logged 60 receptions for 671 yards and six touchdowns, numbers that emerged despite inconsistent quarterback play.
The quarterback room is undergoing a makeover. Gio Lopez, who threw for 1,747 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions last season, will be joined by newcomers Billy Edwards Jr., Travis Burgess and Miles O'Neill, giving Shipp a more stable set of passing options.
Running back Demon June also returns with a strong foundation. He carried the ball 84 times for 464 yards and two scores, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and is now the clear lead back after Davion Gause’s departure to North Carolina State.
If June can sharpen his pass‑catching ability, coaches believe he could evolve into a star‑level weapon. The coaching staff has hinted that his versatility will be a cornerstone of the 2026 offensive scheme.
The Tar Heels’ success will hinge not only on individual performances but also on how quickly the new pieces gel. With a revamped quarterback corps and a refreshed backfield, the program hopes to restore its competitive edge in the ACC.
