A Century of Carolina Football
The University of North Carolina will honor a landmark season by dressing its football team in 1980‑era throwback uniforms during a fall contest that coincides with the 100th anniversary of Kenan Memorial Stadium.
The new kit features Carolina‑blue helmets emblazoned with the classic UNC logo, white jerseys bearing a retro wordmark, and white pants trimmed with inverted striping that echo the design language of four decades ago.
The 1980 squad, which finished 11‑1 and captured the ACC title, remains one of the most celebrated chapters in Tar Heel history, a legacy anchored by Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor and guided by coach Dick Crum, who later earned ACC Coach of the Year honors after leading the team to its highest final ranking since 1948.
Steve Newmark, a longtime figure in the program’s media relations, helped unveil the commemorative logo that will accompany the uniforms; the emblem blends the Morehead‑Patterson Bell Tower with the stadium façade to symbolize the enduring connection between the team and its historic home.
Beyond the visual tribute, the centennial celebration will include special alumni gatherings, a retrospective exhibit, and a halftime ceremony that highlights the stadium’s role in shaping college football culture in the Carolinas.
