Tavis MacMillan has just made history at the University of Denver, becoming the first individual to hold the combined title of General Manager and Assistant Coach for the Pioneers men’s ice hockey program.
The appointment follows an 11‑year tenure as an assistant coach during which MacMillan helped the team capture four national championships and contributed to a total of eleven titles in the program’s storied history.
In his new capacity he will oversee the entire recruiting strategy while continuing to guide players on the ice during games, blending front‑office vision with on‑bench expertise.
MacMillan’s hockey résumé also includes a stint as an amateur scout for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers, where he evaluated talent at the junior and collegiate levels.
Before joining Denver, he spent a decade at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, rising from assistant to head coach and leading the Nanooks to several playoff appearances.
A family legacy reshapes the program
His family’s connection to the university runs deep; his uncle John MacMillan starred for Denver from 1956 to 1960 and was part of the Pioneers’ first two national championships.
The MacMillan lineage has been linked to six of the university’s eleven NCAA‑record championships, and two of Tavis’s three daughters have earned degrees from the institution.
Head Coach David Carle praised the hire, noting that MacMillan’s blend of scouting insight, player development focus, and institutional knowledge makes him uniquely suited for the dual role.
Jim Montgomery, another former Denver coach, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the continuity and fresh energy MacMillan brings as the program looks ahead to the next era.
With a legacy rooted in Denver hockey and a vision that bridges administration and competition, MacMillan is poised to steer the Pioneers toward continued excellence.
