Taylor Black Returns to NC State Baseball as Assistant Coach

Former Florida assistant brings SEC pedigree and high‑impact recruiting to Raleigh

A Familiar Face Returns to Raleigh

Taylor Black is set to rejoin NC State’s baseball program as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, bringing a blend of SEC playing experience, Power Five coaching, and professional scouting to the Wolfpack staff.

Black’s journey began in Raleigh, where he served as an assistant from 2014 to 2017 before heading to the Detroit Tigers organization. Most recently, he spent three seasons at the University of Florida, where the Gators captured two College World Series titles and earned NCAA Tournament berths in every year of his tenure.

During his time in Gainesville, Black helped assemble a roster that produced seven All‑American honorees and attracted high‑impact transfers such as Hurston Waldrep, Colby Shelton, Brody Donay and Tanner Garrison. His eye for talent and ability to develop pitchers were evident in the team’s consistent national success.

Before coaching, Black starred as a shortstop at the University of Kentucky and was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2011 draft. A decade of professional scouting experience followed, sharpening his ability to evaluate talent at the highest level.

Strategic Implications for NC State

His return is expected to reinforce NC State’s recruiting pipeline, especially within the SEC and the broader Southeast. By leveraging relationships forged at Florida and in professional circles, Black aims to elevate the Wolfpack’s competitiveness and sustain momentum built by longtime head coach Elliott Avent.

Athletic director Chris Hart highlighted the hire, noting that Black’s “SEC pedigree, Power Five coaching reps, and half‑decade as a pro scout make him a valuable addition to the staff.” The move signals a continued investment in staff continuity and program growth.
