TCNJ Men’s Soccer Eyes Breakthrough Season After NJAC Final Run

Returning stars and fresh talent aim to build on last year’s success and chase the 1996 championship legacy

The College of New Jersey men’s soccer program is entering the new season with momentum after a memorable run to the NJAC conference finals last year. Finishing the 2024‑2025 campaign with an 11‑5‑5 record, the Lions fell in a penalty shoot‑out, but the experience gained has set a strong foundation for what lies ahead.

Coach Steve DeMatteo has voiced confidence that the squad can build on that progress, noting the return of key contributors and the integration of fresh talent. The coaching staff believes the blend of veterans and newcomers will keep the team competitive in the highly contested NJAC.

Among the returning standouts is senior forward Chris Meder, who earned All‑NJAC honors with 13 goals and 11 assists in the previous season. Freshman Matt Will also made an impact, netting nine goals and earning a spot on the All‑NJAC second team. Sophomore Aidan Ayar, who was third in points during his freshman year, adds further depth to the attacking lineup.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Sean Najdzinowicz anchored the back line, becoming the first freshman to be named NJAC Goalkeeper of the Year with a 0.80 goals‑against average. Alongside him, players such as Matias Hornos, Matt Maceri and Lawrence Mancino were recognized as All‑NJAC selections, underscoring the team’s balanced strength.

The roster will feature nine athletes who started at least 15 games last season, providing continuity and leadership. In addition, ten freshmen have joined the program, promising to inject new energy and depth as the Lions prepare for a demanding schedule.

Looking Ahead

Preseason polls placed TCNJ third in the conference behind Rowan and Montclair State, a ranking that reflects both respect for the program and the challenge ahead. The Lions open their NJAC slate on September 30 with a home matchup against No. 12 Rowan, a tough test that will set the tone for the season.

Beyond the regular schedule, the team aims to advance further in the NJAC tournament, hoping to add another chapter to the legacy of the 1996 National Championship side that still inspires the current roster.
