A proven developer of talent
Texas Christian University announced this week that Jerry Hobbie will join its basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing nearly three decades of collegiate experience to the program. The move underscores the Horned Frogs’ intent to bolster a shooting‑focused offense under new guidance.
Hobbie’s career spans stints at Washington, Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston and Fairfield University, where he helped each program climb the rankings and set new offensive benchmarks. At Washington, the Huskies captured the 2019 Pac‑12 Championship and saw their free‑throw percentage jump from 68.2% to 76.4%.
During his nine‑year tenure at Washington, he also oversaw the development of four NBA draft picks — Jaden McDaniels, Jaylen Nowell, Isaiah Stewart and Matisse Thybulle — who all benefitted from his shooting‑focused approach. Prior to Washington, he spent seven seasons at SMU, guiding the Mustangs to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015 and 2017, and later contributed to Houston’s resurgence, setting a school free‑throw record in his first year.
Jamie Dixon’s vision
Head coach Jamie Dixon, who has known Hobbie for almost 30 years, praised the hire, saying the veteran’s blend of playing acumen and coaching discipline will sharpen the Horned Frogs’ attack and reinforce the program’s culture. Dixon highlighted Hobbie’s proven track record of improving shooting percentages and developing NBA talent.
Beyond the bench, Hobbie remains a standout figure in basketball circles, having earned a place in the Fordham Hall of Fame in 2006 after a stellar college career that included a career free‑throw rate of 81.5% and professional stints in the United States Basketball League and the English Basketball League. He also worked as a bond broker in the private sector of the U.S. government and has two daughters, Joanna and Lea.
