TCU has stripped the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of its media credentials after the newspaper reported an assault that took place in the team’s locker room on August 13, 2024, just days before the Horned Frogs were set to open their season in Dublin, Ireland.
A dispute over credentials and safety
The alleged assault involved junior wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who later identified himself in a deleted Instagram video, and was accompanied by the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields following an altercation that the university described as a violation of team rules and an aggravated assault.
University officials said the report sparked threats directed at Ezukanma, prompting the decision to withhold credentials until a dialogue could be opened with the paper’s sports reporting team. They emphasized that protecting the health and wellbeing of student‑athletes was the driving factor behind the move, and they argued that the initial coverage contained inaccurate details that amplified the threat.
The Star-Telegram, the only full‑time news outlet that covers TCU athletics with dedicated beat writers and photographers, had been the sole conduit for in‑depth reporting on the program. Its removal means the upcoming game against North Carolina will be covered without the newspaper’s on‑site presence.
Shehan Jeyarajah, president of the Football Writers Association of America, publicly condemned the sanction, calling it a chilling move that undermines press freedom and urging the university to restore the credential for the Ireland contest.
