A 19‑year‑old man identified as Tumusifu Bazirake was fatally assaulted during a casual soccer game in west Phoenix earlier this month, police said.
The attack unfolded in a field near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Hubble Street on August 6, where the teenager was found unresponsive by fellow players.
Investigation Underway
Emergency responders transported Bazirake to a local hospital in extremely critical condition, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The cause of death is pending an autopsy, authorities added.
Homicide detectives have classified the incident as a homicide and are working to determine the motive and identify any suspects. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the assault or has information about the suspects to come forward. Tips can be submitted through the department’s tip line, and callers may remain anonymous.
Community members have expressed shock and solidarity, organizing vigils to honor Bazirake’s memory and to call for an end to youth violence on the streets of Phoenix.
