Jakob D. Krise faces multiple charges following the death of Emily Smith, a 20‑year‑old captain of the women's basketball team.

On a Saturday morning near the SUNY Potsdam campus, a black Cadillac Escalade struck Emily Smith, a 20‑year‑old guard and team captain of the women's basketball squad, killing her instantly.

A Tragic Loss on the Court

The vehicle fled the scene, leaving front‑end damage on Pierrepont Avenue at about 3:37 a.m. Police later located the damaged Escalade on U.S. Route 11 around 7:25 a.m., and the driver, 18‑year‑old Jakob D. Krise of Brasher Falls, was taken into custody.

Krise was arraigned in Town of Pierrepont Court and released under probation supervision, with a scheduled appearance in Potsdam Town Court on Wednesday. Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional charges may be pending.

SUNY Potsdam President Suzanne R. Smith announced that, with the family's permission, the student's identity could be shared. Emily Smith, a sophomore business administration major from Greenville, was a transfer student and a captain of the Bears women's basketball team, having appeared in 19 games during the 2025‑26 season.

Head coach Brittany Cohen described Emily as an extraordinary young woman beloved by teammates, coaches and everyone she met, expressing deep heartbreak and extending prayers to her family.

The college community has rallied around the family, with many friends, classmates, coaches and supporters gathering at the hospital where Emily was pronounced dead.

The incident has sparked discussions about road safety and the impact of such tragedies on collegiate athletics, as the campus mourns the loss of a promising student‑athlete.
