Teen football player’s death leads to wrongful death lawsuit against LAUSD

Family alleges failures in safety, equipment and emergency response

A family's fight for accountability

Christopher Garcia, a 16‑year‑old junior varsity football player at South East High School, died from a brain injury sustained during a game in 2024.

According to a lawsuit filed by his relatives, Garcia was tackling a receiver when his head struck the field, leading to a medically induced coma that lasted eleven days before he passed away.

Allegations of negligence

The family’s complaint accuses the Los Angeles Unified School District of failing to ensure safe playing conditions, provide proper equipment and maintain adequate supervision, and of not having an ambulance on site when the injury occurred.

They further dispute the district’s assertion that two medical staff members were present and responded immediately, arguing that emergency services should have been dispatched without delay.

Kimberly Garcia, Christopher’s sister, said the lawsuit is about holding the school district accountable for the loss of her brother and preventing similar tragedies.

LAUSD officials maintain that their policies require qualified medical personnel at all games and that two staff members were on hand to provide immediate attention, but they have declined to comment on the pending litigation.
