Record-breaking Spanish-language soccer coverage
Telemundo and its streaming partner Peacock have cemented a historic milestone in Spanish-language sports broadcasting, delivering record-breaking audience numbers throughout the recently concluded FIFA World Cup 2026.
The tournament’s centerpiece, the final showdown between Spain and Argentina, attracted 23.9 million viewers, marking the most-watched soccer match ever recorded in Spanish-language media.
Overall, the competition delivered an average of 6.3 million viewers per match across 104 games, a 143 percent surge compared with the 2022 edition.
Telemundo invested heavily in original content, producing more than 700 hours of bespoke programming and assembling a diverse roster of on-air talent to engage viewers.
Streaming platforms saw unprecedented activity, with Peacock and Telemundo averaging three million viewers per minute; the championship match alone posted an average minute audience of 13.9 million.
The network’s reach extended beyond national figures, ranking as the top Spanish-language television outlet on all 34 matchdays, and June 2026 became the highest-performing month in the network’s history, posting a 1.4 million average daily audience.
Social-media metrics underscored the cultural impact, generating 2.25 billion video views and 75.1 million interactions — nearly three times the combined totals from the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
NBCUniversal’s advertising partners also benefited, reporting double-digit gains in brand memorability and ad likeability, while eight of the company’s owned stations captured at least half of the audience share in their respective markets.
The combined effect of these metrics illustrates a transformative shift in how Spanish-speaking audiences consume major sporting events, positioning Spanish-language media at the forefront of next-generation sports broadcasting.
