A Century of Owl Soccer
Temple University’s men’s soccer program is celebrating its 100‑year anniversary, a milestone that traces the team’s evolution from a modest campus pastime to a nationally recognized collegiate powerhouse.
At the heart of that legacy stands Pete Leaness, who guided the Owls for 41 seasons between 1930 and 1970, compiling a career record of 245‑97‑36 and steering the club to national championships in 1951 and 1953 while producing 36 All‑American selections.
Following Leaness, John Boles, an All‑America player turned head coach in 1974, added his own chapter by orchestrating 13 ten‑win seasons, three NCAA Tournament berths and a steady pipeline of talent that kept the program competitive.
The roster of alumni reads like a who’s who of American soccer history, with five former Owls — George Nemchick, Ben McLaughlin, Walt Bahr, Jack Dunn and Len Oliver — earning Olympic caps for the United States, while Charlie Duccilli remains the program’s all‑time leader in goals (66) and points (132) from 1965 to 1967.
Jeff Kraft, now ranked fifth in NCAA history for career saves, also holds the Owls’ record for goals‑against‑average, underscoring the defensive excellence that has defined many of Temple’s standout teams.
The 2026 season opens with a road test against Villanova, a matchup that will showcase a blend of 14 newcomers and 12 international athletes, as the Owls aim to rekindle past glory while honoring a century of tradition on the field.
Home games will be played at the Temple Sports Complex, where the program hopes to leverage familiar surroundings and passionate fans to build momentum toward a resurgence that reflects the rich heritage of Temple soccer.
