Chawinga’s New Deal Secures Future Success
Temwa Chawinga, the Malawi-born forward who has become a cornerstone of the Kansas City Current, announced this week that she will remain with the club through the 2029 season.
The extension reflects a mutual commitment between the player and the franchise, which has watched her evolve from a promising rookie to a record‑breaking star.
Chawinga’s résumé includes two Golden Boot awards and two Most Valuable Player honors in the National Women’s Soccer League, as well as a historic achievement as the first player to capture back‑to‑back league honors in her opening two seasons.
Her 38 goals in just 52 appearances for the Current have already rewritten the NWSL record books, surpassing the previous single‑season scoring benchmark and cementing her status as one of the league’s most lethal finishers.
Beyond club play, the 2025 Guardian ranking of sixth best female footballer in the world underscores her growing influence on the global stage, while her 25‑plus goals for the Malawi Women’s National Team highlight her role as a trailblazer for African women’s soccer.
General Manager Chris Long and Vice President Angie Long praised the extension, noting that Chawinga’s leadership will be pivotal as the Current aims to contend for the NWSL title in the coming years. Director of Soccer Operations Ryan Dell added that the contract aligns with the club’s long‑term strategy to retain top talent.
Club officials say the contract is part of a broader strategy to build a sustainable, championship‑contending roster, and they view Chawinga’s continued presence as essential to both on‑field success and the team’s expanding fan base.
