Tennessee baseball has added two pitchers from the transfer portal, Parker Detmers and Jake McCoy, strengthening a staff that already includes several newcomers.
A Strategic Boost for the Vols' Rotation
Jake McCoy, a left‑handed pitcher who posted a 4‑5 record with a 6.90 ERA and 77 strikeouts during the 2025 season, is recovering from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the 2026 campaign at South Carolina. Ranked 150th among draft prospects by MLB.com, he chose Tennessee over offers from LSU and South Carolina, signaling the program’s growing appeal.
Parker Detmers brings a different profile: a 6‑4, 250‑pound right‑hander who compiled a 3‑2 record and a 5.71 ERA over two seasons at Louisville, striking out 32 batters while walking 18. Detmers is draft‑eligible this year but is not viewed as a high‑risk prospect, making his addition a low‑cost, high‑upside move for the Vols.
Both players join a pitching class that also features Brody Trosclair and Ricky Ojeda, while two‑way standout Braydon Kersey and former Air Force second baseman Wyatt Hanoian also arrive. The influx of talent reflects Tennessee’s intent to compete aggressively in the SEC and to develop a deeper, more versatile rotation.
The coaching staff is already mapping out how to integrate their skill sets into the upcoming schedule, and fans can expect a more competitive staff when the Vols open play next spring.
