A Defensive Revamp in Knoxville
The University of Tennessee announced this week that Josh Sinagoga, a former analyst who helped Michigan capture a national championship in 2023, will join the Volunteers' coaching staff as a defensive analyst for the 2026 season.
Sinagoga’s football journey spans several programs, including stints as a coach and recruiting coordinator at Youngstown State, as well as analytical roles at Cincinnati, Iowa, Central Michigan and Northwood University. His reputation as a sharp strategist and recruiter has made him a sought‑after talent across the Midwest.
Joining him is Jim Knowles, who has been tapped to serve as Tennessee’s new defensive coordinator. Knowles, a veteran of the Big Ten, brings a decade of experience from Penn State and Ohio State, where he honed a reputation for developing aggressive, turnover‑driven units.
What makes Knowles’s appointment notable is that he will be calling plays in the SEC for the first time since 2003, a period that saw him transition from the Midwestern conference to the Ole Miss staff before returning to the Big Ten. His arrival signals a willingness by Tennessee’s leadership to blend proven SEC experience with fresh analytical insight.
Together, Sinagoga and Knowles represent a hybrid approach: a blend of championship pedigree and SEC‑tested coaching. The move underscores the Volunteers’ intent to reshape a defense that has struggled for consistency in recent years, aiming to restore a culture of aggressive play and disciplined execution.
