Tennessee is actively building its 2027 basketball signing class, a cycle that will not culminate until the spring of 2027. While the roster is still open, the coaching staff has already identified a key target: four-star point guard Antonio Pemberton, who has listed the Volunteers among his top eight preferred schools.
Pemberton, a native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, honed his game at The Master's Academy International in Stow, Massachusetts, where he has risen to the No. 8 spot among point guards in the 2027 class and stands as the top-ranked player from his state, according to 247Sports.
The recruitment timeline shows Tennessee extended a scholarship to Pemberton on May 25, 2024. A year later, on July 15, 2025, Boston College followed suit, with then-head coach Earl Grant — now an assistant at Tennessee — delivering the offer. The overlap of interests underscores the competitive nature of the market.
Beyond Boston College, Pemberton’s list of suitors includes a dozen other programs, ranging from Bryant and Rutgers to traditional powerhouses such as Kansas, UCLA, Michigan State and Alabama. The breadth of interest reflects his status as a coveted prospect, though Tennessee has yet to secure a verbal commitment for the 2027 class.
What the Pursuit Signals
The pursuit of Pemberton also highlights the program’s strategy of leveraging relationships within the coaching network. Earl Grant’s prior connection to Boston College not only facilitated the offer but also signals a broader effort to tap into established coaching pipelines.
Tennessee already has four pledges in its 2026 class — small forward Ralph Scott, power forward Manny Green, point guard Marquis Clark and power forward Chris Washington Jr. — providing a foundation upon which the 2027 class can be built.
