A New Era for the Lady Vols
The University of Tennessee’s women’s basketball program is entering the upcoming campaign with a completely rebuilt lineup. After a season that highlighted both promise and gaps, the coaching staff opted for a massive roster turnover, bringing in 13 transfer athletes and two promising freshmen.
At the heart of this transformation is new assistant coach Isoken Uzamere, whose focus on defense has shaped the team’s recruitment philosophy. Uzamere is searching for players who embody a "screw loose" mentality — athletes willing to embrace a chaotic, pride‑driven approach on the defensive end.
Defining the "Screw Loose" Mindset
Uzamere describes the ideal defensive mindset as one where players take personal pride in stifling opponents, even if it means playing with a bit of reckless energy. "We want individuals who are a little crazy, who love the grind of not letting anyone get by," she explained, emphasizing that this ethos will permeate the team’s overall identity.
Three recruits fit that description perfectly. Zhen Craft, a Georgia native, brings a tenacious on‑ball presence. Fatmata Janneh, formerly of Texas A&M, adds length and shot‑blocking instincts. Aaliyah Moore, a Texas product, contributes versatility and a relentless work ethic. Each is expected to assume prominent roles despite the team’s limited frontcourt depth.
With a thinner interior, the Lady Vols will lean heavily on speed, pressure, and a willingness to chase down every loose ball. The coaching staff believes that a gritty, high‑energy style can offset the lack of size, turning perceived disadvantages into a competitive edge.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming season will test whether this unconventional blend of talent and philosophy can translate into consistent wins. If the "screw loose" approach takes hold, Tennessee could emerge as a formidable opponent, driven by a defense‑first culture that prizes intensity above all else.
