Tennessee Sports Writers Celebrate Local Baseball Excellence

The Tennessee Sports Writers Association has announced its Class 2A All-State baseball team, and the names that appear on the list read like a who’s who of the state’s most promising talent.

Among the honorees are Caleb Cayce, Sam Hetzer, and Kason Young, each of whom has delivered performances that have turned heads across the high school baseball landscape.

Caleb Cayce’s Breakout Season

Cayce’s impact was felt most dramatically in the state tournament, where he threw a complete-game shutout to beat Cascade 1-0 on May 20. The outing capped a season in which he posted a 12-2 record, a 3.14 ERA, and 107 strikeouts.

At the plate, Cayce batted .436, collected 58 hits, scored 54 runs, stole 33 bases and drove in 27 RBIs, numbers that earned him a spot as the school’s first-ever TBCA Mr. Baseball finalist.

His all-state selection underscores not only personal excellence but also the rising profile of Heritage’s program, which finished the year with a 31-13 record, the best in school history.

Sam Hetzer’s All-Round Impact

Sam Hetzer complemented Cayce’s dominance with a .373 average, a .525 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage, translating to 44 hits and 34 RBIs.

Defensively, Hetzer posted a .955 fielding percentage while adding 24 runs and 11 stolen bases, proving he could handle both the bat and the glove.

Kason Young Repeats as County Star

Kason Young, already a familiar face on the All-State stage, earned the honor for the second straight season after leading Robertson County in batting average (.483), on-base percentage (.562), slugging percentage (.862) and OPS (1.424).

He finished the year with 42 hits, 33 runs scored and 25 RBIs, numbers that helped East Robertson repeat as district champions and secure a fourth straight region title.

The trio’s recognitions reflect a broader narrative of growth for both Heritage and East Robertson, programs that have turned consistent district success into sustained state-level contention.
