A medical setback reshapes the Vols' front seven
The Tennessee Volunteers announced that Penn State transfer Chaz Coleman has been medically disqualified, creating an unexpected vacancy at the LEO position. Coleman's size and experience had been projected to anchor the defensive front, and his absence forces the coaching staff to look inward for solutions.
Jordan Norman, a Tulane transfer, has been earmarked to assume the starting LEO role. Known for his agility and pass‑rushing instincts, Norman brings a different skill set that the staff believes can compensate for the loss of Coleman's interior presence.
Depth concerns at linebacker
Behind Norman, the Volunteers' linebacker corps is thinner than usual. Redshirt freshman Christian Gass is the only experienced backup, while a group of true freshmen are slated to see limited snaps early in the season. This scarcity of proven depth has heightened the urgency of finding viable rotations.
Despite the thin bench, Tennessee's linebacker room remains the most talent‑laden unit on the roster. All‑SEC caliber players Arion Carter, Edwin Spillman and Amare Campbell headline a group that also includes returners Jadon Perlotte, Jeremiah Telander, Jaedon Harmon and Jordan Burns.
To offset the personnel gaps, the coaching staff is exploring a 3‑3‑5 defensive alignment. By deploying three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs, the Vols aim to maximize speed and versatility while leveraging the depth of their linebacker group.
The new scheme will also feature two highly‑recruited freshmen, Brayden Rouse and TJ White, who are expected to contribute on special teams and occasional defensive snaps. Their arrival adds another layer of potential to a unit that must adapt quickly to the challenges ahead.
