Farooq finished the previous season atop the Volunteers' tackle chart with 76 stops, added two interceptions — one returned for a touchdown — and ranked second in the SEC with those picks. His knack for forcing fumbles and delivering hard hits made him a linchpin in a scheme that frequently deployed three safeties on the field.
The injury marks the third preseason setback for a unit already missing two other key contributors. Coach Jim Knowles praised Farooq’s play‑making ability and work ethic, noting that the defense must now reshape its identity without his experience.
Searching for New Faces
To fill the void, Tennessee has turned to the transfer portal, welcoming eight defensive backs, among them Michigan’s TJ Metcalf and Penn State’s Dejuan Lane.
