Tennessee State University has announced that Teresa Phillips, a cornerstone of its athletics history, will be inducted into the TSU Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026.
A Pioneering Coach
From 1989 to 2000 Phillips served as head coach of the women’s basketball program, guiding the team to back‑to‑back Ohio Valley Conference championships in 1993‑94 and 1994‑95. Her 1993‑94 squad captured the university’s first NCAA Tournament appearance, marking a watershed moment for TSU athletics.
Phillips’s excellence was recognized nationally, earning her three Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards and the 1990 USA Today National Coach of the Year honor. She also made history as the first woman to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team, breaking new ground for gender equity in the sport.
From Coach to Administrator
In 2002 Phillips transitioned to the role of Director of Athletics, where she spearheaded a period of rapid growth and transformation. Under her leadership the department launched its first official athletics website, secured NCAA grant funding, and oversaw major facility upgrades that reshaped the campus sports landscape.
Her administrative tenure also prioritized academic success, raising student‑athlete graduation rates and expanding sponsorship opportunities that brought new resources to the university. The department’s achievements included 12 Ohio Valley Conference championships across various sports.
Phillips’s impact has been acknowledged beyond the university. She was named to Sports Illustrated’s list of the 101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports, selected as one of Tennessee’s 10 Legends in Women’s Basketball during the 2014 Women’s Final Four, and has been inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the Ohio Valley Conference, Vanderbilt Athletics, and Fisk University.
Today, Teresa Phillips stands as a testament to perseverance, innovation, and leadership. Her legacy continues to inspire current and future student‑athletes at Tennessee State University and throughout the broader collegiate sports community.
