The University of Evansville announced this week that Terry Johnson has been appointed associate head coach of its men’s basketball program, bringing a wealth of high‑level experience to the role. Johnson, a longtime assistant at several power‑conference programs, will join the Purple Aces with a clear mandate to develop talent and sustain the program’s upward trajectory.
His résumé includes five seasons at Purdue, where the Boilermakers held the No. 1 spot in the national rankings for four years and advanced to at least the Sweet 16 in each of those campaigns. In the 2023‑24 season, Purdue’s defense ranked 12th in the country in efficiency, a unit Johnson helped shape.
A Championship pedigree meets local ambition
Before Purdue, Johnson spent four years at Ohio State, guiding the Buckeyes to three NCAA Tournament appearances, and earlier completed a decade‑long stint at Butler, where the Bulldogs earned eight tournament bids. Those experiences have equipped him with a deep understanding of high‑pressure environments and player development.
Johnson said his primary focus will be on serving the players, staff and the broader Evansville community. He emphasized that the program’s success is measured not only by wins but by the growth of each student‑athlete both on and off the court. The coach also highlighted the strong support the university receives from its fan base and local partners.
David Ragland, the university’s athletic director, praised Johnson’s blend of analytical rigor and player‑centric philosophy, noting that the hire aligns with the school’s ambition to compete at the highest level of collegiate basketball. Craig Snow, who oversees scouting operations, added that Johnson’s network across the Midwest will bolster recruiting efforts.
