A Fresh Start for Local Soccer
The Terryville and Gilbert high schools have announced a joint girls soccer co‑op for the upcoming season, a move designed to preserve a program that once ranked among the Berkshire League’s elite.
With only twelve players on the Terryville roster last year — seven of whom were seniors — the combined squad will draw talent from both communities, creating a larger pool for competition and development.
Jared Fritch and Maggie Bossi will share head‑coaching duties, with Gilbert serving as the host school; their leadership aims to instill continuity while the program rebuilds.
The arrangement also secures a spot for the Gilbert boys soccer team in the state tournament this fall, where they plan to field both junior‑varsity and varsity sides, and they expect two of the five international students who participated last year to return.
Organizers stress that the co‑op is a temporary bridge; the goal is to generate enough enthusiasm to reinstate separate teams once the two‑year agreement expires, a strategy that could also be applied to other sports such as softball.
Local officials and school boards have voiced support, noting that the collaboration reflects a broader effort to sustain youth athletics in the region amid shrinking enrollment numbers.
