Texans poised for WAC championship
Tarleton State's baseball squad enters its final regular‑season series against Sacramento State with the chance to lock down the outright Western Athletic Conference title. The victory would mark the program's first outright championship in its Division I era and cement a campaign that has already rewritten several records.
Coach and players alike have highlighted the team's resilience, noting a 33‑win total that surpasses the previous single‑season high. The Texans have also posted an eight‑game winning streak in conference play and sit at 7‑4 historically against the Hornets, a record that dates back to 2021.
Road triumphs and historic matchups
The schedule has taken the team from Waco to Austin, where they stunned the nation's No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns 6‑1, to Albuquerque, where they have gone 8‑0 against the New Mexico Lobos over the past two seasons. A recent 17‑run outburst against Incarnate Word on Feb. 24 showcased the offense's firepower, while a perfect 8‑0 stretch against New Mexico underscores their dominance on the road.
Senior pitcher Cage McCloud will take the mound alongside his brother Slade McCloud, a returning standout, adding a personal storyline to the climax. Their presence comes as the program celebrates milestones that include breaking the D1 era win record and positioning itself for the top seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament.
If the Texans secure the win, they will also post the most road victories in a single season in school history, a testament to a schedule that has tested them against elite competition from Baylor, the University of Texas at Austin, and other powerhouses.
