A Strategic Overseas Adventure
In August 2026, the Texas A&M men’s basketball squad will board a flight to the Bahamas, where they will compete in the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League. The itinerary includes three exhibition matchups against the University of Victoria, Toros del Valle, and Carleton University, giving the Aggies a chance to test new strategies on the court.
Head coach Bucky McMillan has framed the trip as more than a preseason warm‑up; he views it as a vital opportunity to forge chemistry among a roster that blends returning veterans with a wave of newcomers. ‘Playing abroad forces us to adapt quickly and grow together,’ McMillan said in a recent interview.
The Aggies enter the tournament with a strong foundation. After guiding Texas A&M to a 22‑11 record and a fourth‑place finish in the SEC in his debut season, McMillan’s team ranked among the nation’s top 15 in scoring offense, assists, three‑point shooting and bench production. Among the returning pieces are Mackenzie Mgbako and Zach Clemence, while 10 fresh faces — including leading scorer PJ Haggerty from Kansas State — are expected to add depth.
Haggerty’s pedigree is notable; he finished fourth nationally last season with an average of 23.4 points per game. His arrival signals a boost to the team’s offensive arsenal, complementing the experience of Mgbako and Clemence.
The tour also reflects a recent NCAA rule change that allows college programs to embark on foreign tours on an annual basis, a privilege that was previously limited to once every four academic years. The Baha Mar Hoops Summer League is organized by bdG Sports, a Kentucky‑based firm that oversees roughly 20 collegiate basketball events at the resort each November.
