The 2026 offseason for Texas A&M got off to an unexpected start when the Aggies dropped two straight games to USC in the College Station Regional, leaving the program with a rare early exit.
Coaching overhaul
In the wake of that disappointment, the coaching staff underwent a swift transformation. Coach Michael Earley dismissed pitching coach Jason Kelley and replaced him with former MLB pitcher Barry Enright. At the same time, Nolan Cain, a former ace recruiter, returned to College Station as associate head coach, a move that immediately sparked interest from the transfer market. His arrival also triggered the commitment of South Carolina transfer pitcher Logan Prisco, who chose the Aggies after Cain’s reinstatement.
Portal impact
The Aggies also turned to the transfer portal, landing eight newcomers who could reshape the roster. Among them, Nate Savoie emerged as the most highly touted piece, landing at No. 2 in ESPN’s portal rankings. Savoie, a power hitter who previously starred at Loyola Marymount before moving to Clemson, posted 16 home runs for the Tigers in 2026, though the team missed the NCAA tournament. He brings a blend of catcher and left‑field versatility, but his plate discipline remains a work in progress. Complementing Savoie is Wade Cooper, a Texas State transfer ranked No. 39 overall. Cooper finished his freshman season with a 4.72 ERA, five saves in 66.2 innings and 73 strikeouts, and he will be draft‑eligible in 2028. His immediate role is expected to be a starting pitcher this fall.
The combination of Cain’s recruiting clout, Enright’s MLB pedigree and the influx of talent like Savoie and Cooper is viewed as a direct response to the offensive void left by the recent losses. Athletic director Michael Earley emphasized that the roster moves were designed to avoid a significant drop‑off at the plate and to give the team a deeper pitching arsenal. With the new staff in place and the transfer class now on campus, the Aggies hope to rebound quickly and contend for a regional berth in the next season.
