Freshmen Standouts on the 2026 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List
The Maxwell Football Club has unveiled its 2026 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year preseason watch list, and Texas is well represented with three of its newest players earning the honor. The award, which recognizes the most outstanding freshman in college football, will narrow its list to 14 semifinalists on November 4, then to five finalists on December 2, before crowning a winner on December 28.
Among them, linebacker Tyler Atkinson arrives in Austin with a pedigree that includes a five‑star rating, a No. 1 ranking among linebackers by Rivals and ESPN, and a haul of high‑school accolades such as the Butkus Award and the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year. As a senior at Grayson High School he recorded 77 tackles (38 solo), 25 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles, cementing his status as the nation’s top linebacker prospect.
Defensive end Richard Wesley, who reclassified from the 2027 cohort to the 2026 class, brings elite pass‑rushing ability that was evident at Sierra Canyon, where he logged 27 sacks in just 34 varsity games and earned MaxPreps Sophomore All‑American honors. His early arrival adds depth to a defensive line that already boasts standout talent.
Versatile playmaker Jermaine Bishop Jr. adds another dimension, having been named Mr. Texas Football and excelling on both sides of the ball at Willis High School. He amassed over 1,200 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns while also contributing 34 rushes for 378 yards and four scores, showcasing the kind of all‑purpose skill set that can influence games in multiple ways.
The presence of three Longhorns on the watch list underscores a recruiting class that could rival the depth seen in recent powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State, all of which also boast three nominees this year. Texas will open its 2026 campaign against Texas State on September 5 at Darrell K Royal‑Texas Memorial Stadium, giving the freshmen an early stage to make an impact.
