Texas Longhorns baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle has turned his attention to shaping a 2027 roster that blends high‑school talent, seasoned seniors and a carefully curated portal class, all with the goal of restoring the program’s place among the nation’s elite.
The foundation includes returning seniors Casey Borba and Ethan Mendoza, while six of the original high‑school signees have moved on, but six players from Baseball America’s top 250 withdrew, giving the team immediate depth and stability.
Schlossnagle’s portal strategy was executed with precision: only two draft‑eligible prospects, Peyton Brennan and Gavin King, were added, and both went undrafted, ensuring every newcomer will be available for the 2027 season.
The coaching staff reflects the plan’s momentum; pitching coach Max Weiner has kept key arms in the fold, even after the loss of promising relievers Cooper Rummel and Grady Westphal, while recruiting coordinator Nolan Cain’s departure to Texas A&M was quickly absorbed.
The class now sits fourth in the nation according to Baseball America, highlighted by star prospects Dylan Volantis, Sam Cozart, Adrian Rodriguez and Anthony Pack Jr., as well as the transfer addition of Brennan from UCLA.
Development remains the core philosophy, with an emphasis on strike throwing for pitchers and on improving swing decisions, contact ability and bat speed for hitters, aided by increased scholarships, NIL opportunities and new eligibility rules that make it easier for players like Borba and Mendoza to stay.
With these pieces in place, Schlossnagle believes Texas can compete among the country’s elite and chase its first national championship since 2025, a goal that has already generated high expectations among fans and analysts alike.
