Texas Southern University’s Board of Regents has officially confirmed Corey Lowery as the new head coach of the Tigers, ending a four‑month vacancy that left the program without a leader in Division I.
Lowery, a longtime assistant at Seton Hall, succeeds Johnny Jones, who left the position in April to join LSU’s coaching staff, and his hiring was presented by the board as a step that will preserve the university’s championship tradition.
The decision has sparked criticism among students and players, who gathered in the president’s office to voice support for interim coach Shyrone Chatman, arguing that his decade‑long service deserves continuity.
Student dissent over the coaching change
University President James W. Crawford III defended the appointment, describing Lowery as a “maker of men” and insisting that delaying the hire would have cost a crucial year ahead of the upcoming season.
Lowery, in his first public comments, said he was honored to join “the premier institution in the SWAC and one of the top programs in the country,” pledging to build on the school’s athletic legacy.
The board also approved Ashley Robinson as the new athletic director, adding another layer of transition as the university balances the start of the academic year with preseason preparations.
