Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire has said that the program’s day‑to‑day operations have continued unabated, even as the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga unfolds.
Speaking during the offseason, McGuire pointed to the backing he receives from university leadership and the booster community, saying that the administration’s confidence has allowed the team to focus on preparation.
Defending a Player in Rehab
McGuire has publicly defended Sorsby, who admitted to betting on Indiana games while at Cincinnati, and highlighted the school’s decision to keep him on the roster while he entered a rehabilitation program.
The coach also noted that Texas Tech filed a lawsuit with the NCAA to restore Sorsby’s eligibility, underscoring the institution’s willingness to fight for its athletes.
Sorsby, a former Bearcats transfer, is currently training in the Dallas metro area and will retain access to Texas Tech’s athletic facilities as he prepares for the next NFL draft cycle.
A Program Under Pressure
Despite the controversy, the Red Raiders have maintained a semblance of normalcy on the field, with practices and meetings proceeding as scheduled.
McGuire emphasized that the team’s focus remains on competition, and that the broader community expects the program to stay resilient.
