A Summer of Strategy
The Texas Tech women's basketball program, known as the Lady Raiders, is gearing up for a busy summer that will take them across the Atlantic to Canada, where they will contest two exhibition matches as a final dress rehearsal before the upcoming season.
Their preparation follows a breakthrough year that saw the team capture a silver medal at the FISU World University Games and a stint in Germany, experiences that have already added depth to the squad's chemistry. This summer's itinerary includes games against the University of British Columbia and its Okanagan counterpart in Langley, British Columbia, a pair of opponents that promise to test the Lady Raiders in new ways.
The trip is made possible through the generosity of donors who have helped fund travel, accommodation and training opportunities, underscoring the community's investment in the program's growth. For the players, the exposure to different styles of play and competitive environments is seen as a catalyst for building cohesion before the rigors of the fall schedule.
Coach Gerlich's Vision
Coach Krista Gerlich has been vocal about the importance of extra practice time, noting that the additional reps will allow the team to fine‑tune fundamentals and foster stronger bonds among the athletes. 'We want to use these games to create a foundation that we can build on when the season starts,' Gerlich said, emphasizing that chemistry is as critical as skill.
Roster continuity will play a key role, with two starters returning from last season, while the team welcomes back 7‑foot‑1 center Stephanie Okechukwu, who missed action after joining mid‑season but is now fully integrated into the lineup. The blend of experience and new height aims to give the Lady Raiders a versatile edge against their Canadian foes.
The Lady Raiders' recent history adds another layer of optimism; after ending a 13‑year NCAA Tournament drought and securing their first March Madness victory since 2005, the program is poised to translate past breakthroughs into sustained success. The upcoming Canadian fixtures are viewed as a pivotal step in that trajectory.
